Before picking up this book, I thought it was going to be heavy, something that would demand endless soul-searching. But Michael A. Singer writes in a way that’s surprisingly easy to grasp.
The examples are simple, relatable, and perfectly chosen to explain complex ideas.
First, he shows a real-life scenario, and then the concept, which definitely clicks better.
What I really appreciate is that the book isn’t just deep thoughts; it gives practical ways to apply them in daily life.
The book is structured into five main sections:
Part I – Awakening Consciousness
Part II – Experiencing Energy
Part III – Freeing Yourself
Part IV – Going Beyond
Part V – Living Life
Each part is broken down into smaller, digestible chapters, usually 8–10 pages long. I love this format because it makes the ideas easy to grasp while giving enough space to reflect and internalize them.
He was the founder of Medical Manager Corporation, a pioneering healthcare software company, which was later acquired by WebMD, and he worked at WebMD for about four and a half years as the CEO of WebMD Practice Services.
He was indicted on charges of conspiracy and fraud for allegedly inflating company earnings by $16.8 million between 1997 and 2001. The investigation and legal battle lasted for several years. On January 11, 2010, he agreed to pay a $2.5 million settlement, and the charges against him were subsequently dropped.
Surprisingly, he wrote The Untethered Soul during this time when he was going through the indictment. A true example of crossing The Thin Line when you are at your lowest!
The story of my roommate – the constant chatter in our minds. We all have it, and we tend to think it’s helpful. But most of the time, it just feeds us unnecessary or even wrong advice or things we already know.
Who we are – I loved how the author describes our true self. We are not our names, our bodies, or our relationships. At the core, we are consciousness, observing everything around us.
Infinite energy – The idea that there’s a limitless source of energy we can tap into. I’ll admit, this part felt a bit vague for me at first. That’s probably because I hadn’t fully internalized the earlier sections. You really need to understand yourself first before moving into energy concepts.
Pain as the price of freedom and consciousness – I loved how the author framed this. True growth and inner freedom often come with discomfort, but it’s worth it.
Final Thoughts
Overall, The Untethered Soul is a powerful and accessible guide to understanding yourself. It doesn’t just give deep insights, but also helps you reflect, internalize, and apply them in your daily life. If you’re ready to look inward, question what really drives you, and explore real freedom beyond surface-level change, this book is worth picking up.
